Dancing with the Storm

Is a little chaos actually good for us?

I think a little chaos is actually good for us. If everything ran perfectly all the time, I’m not sure life would be nearly as exciting. Some people—myself included—seem to thrive in chaos. As a crisis interventionist, there are moments when everything is happening at once, and that’s when I do some of my best work.

Lately, though, life has felt especially chaotic. I finally had a chance to slow down enough to write, and it reminded me how much I’ve missed it. I keep telling myself that I’m going to make writing a priority, but then life gets busy, the chaos takes over, and somehow it always ends up on the back burner.

Today felt like a small win. We have a soccer game to kick off the new work week, but thankfully it’s not an hour away this time. I got dinner made early, the house isn’t a complete disaster, and I clocked in early for work so I could clock out early and get a few things crossed off my list. It wasn’t a perfect day, but it felt productive.

One thing I really want to focus on is making the things I love a priority. I keep saying I want to fill my own cup, but that’s only going to happen if I intentionally make time for the things that bring me joy—like writing, reading, and simply slowing down every now and then.

Because while a little chaos can be energizing, too much of it can be exhausting. Sometimes what we really need is a little more calm.

This weekend gave me exactly that. I spent some time outside, went swimming, got completely sunburned (worth it…mostly), and lost myself in a couple of good books. It wasn’t anything extraordinary, but it was exactly the kind of reset I needed.

Maybe that’s the balance I’m trying to find—not eliminating the chaos, because it’s part of who I am, but making sure I leave room for the quiet moments too.
